The use of smoldering plants and resins possibly originated from prehistoric campfires in caves. The ceremony of cleansing people, places, and objects with smoke is still popular today. Smudging smoke is made by placing dried plants or herbs on smoldering coals, or by lighting dried herbs in a ceramic bowl or large shell.
