This product was brought by the Maroons from Africa (including Congo) and plays a major role in various cultural occasions. In Congo, pemba means “to be white.”

Pimba, also called “pemba doti,” is used to anoint amulets and other objects

related to magic and ritual. Pimba, a white clay, is used to become one with the dead.

Whitening the body allows the person to blend in with the gods/spirits. Maroons use pimba during wintry rituals to connect with their ancestors

and to ask them for help and/or advice. Pimba is used for anointing both the body and

musical instruments used to summon a winti.
