Herbaceous plant with very long-stalked, lance- to linear-shaped, slightly wavy leaves. The fruits have transverse stripes. The well-known abongra oil is made from the seeds.
The ripe plants are tied in thick bunches, dried in the sun, and then beaten out. In both Suriname and Curaçao, the seeds are made into a popular confectionery. In some cultures, the seeds are used for cultural baths and medicine.
